The Science Of Milk Production: Why It’s More Than Just Removing Milk
Apr 26, 2025Milk supply isn't just a mechanical process—it's an intelligent, hormone-led dance between your body, your mind, and your emotions.
In every letdown.
In every drop.
In every moment your baby comes to your chest—there’s more happening behind the scenes than most people realize.
Whether you're breastfeeding or pumping (or both), understanding the why behind milk production helps replace stress with confidence. So let’s break it down in a way that feels both science-backed and deeply human.
Milk Supply Involves More Than One Step
There are five key phases involved in producing milk—and every one works best when your body and nervous system feel safe, supported, and heard.
Nipple Stimulation
Whether through your baby’s latch or your pump, this stimulation sends a message from your breasts to your brain that milk is needed.
It’s the first spark—and signals everything else that follows.
Oxytocin Release
This is your "love hormone." It’s what causes the milk ejection reflex (letdown), releasing milk from the alveoli through the ducts to your nipple.
Oxytocin is powerful—but it’s also sensitive.
Stress, interruptions, pain, and even unresolved emotions can reduce how much is released… which can impact how easily milk flows.
Prolactin Release
This is the hormone that tells your body to make more milk for the next feed.
It peaks during night feeds and is released every time milk is removed.
Prolactin is more about future supply—so consistent and relaxed feeding or pumping helps prime your body for what's next.
Supply and Demand
The golden rule: The more milk you remove, the more your body makes.
Frequent, effective removal tells your brain:
“Milk is needed—keep making it."
But it’s not just frequency—it’s also your body’s ability to receive the message. That’s why your stress levels, rest, and emotional state all impact this feedback loop.
Hormonal Balance
Milk production depends on your hormones being in sync.
If your cortisol (stress hormone) is high, or if your body’s overwhelmed from lack of sleep, trauma, or depletion—it can disrupt the entire system.
That’s why self-care, rest, boundaries, and nourishment aren’t indulgent—they’re part of the biology of your milk supply.
Why This Matters
There’s a common message out there that “you just have to nurse or pump more” to make more milk.
And while that’s partly true… it’s only part of the picture.
If you’re pumping constantly, doing all the things, but still struggling—it’s not your fault.
It might not be a supply problem.
It might be an emotional or hormonal interruption.
Which is why respecting your body—not just mechanically, but emotionally—is one of the kindest and wisest things you can do for your milk supply.
Try This, Love
Take one gentle moment right now.
Place a hand on your chest or belly.
Breathe in for four counts…
Pause…
Breathe out slowly for six counts.
Repeat that two or three times.
Let your shoulders soften. Let your jaw unclench. Let your nervous system know: It's safe to release. It's safe to receive.
This simple shift helps oxytocin release more easily—and who knows? It may help your milk let down flow a little more gently, too.
What To Remember
- Milk supply is deeply impacted by your inner state—your stress levels, your nervous system, your emotions.
- Oxytocin and prolactin are the hormones that lead the way.
- Emotional safety and physical nourishment aren’t optional. They’re essential.
This isn’t about doing more.
It’s about tuning in. Slowing down. And giving your body the safety it needs to do what it already knows how to do.
Milk production isn’t just a function. It’s a whisper of connection between you and your baby.
And when you support both body and mind, your supply can rise naturally.
